History:

The Hornetwas completed in late 2394 at Utopia Planta Shiyards, Mars. Upon completion, she was one of six Sovereign class starships selected for the experimental Mk. II and sentinal project.

The Sentinal project included upgrades to the main ship systems as well as defenses. The main inclusion is the set of paired phaser piont defense turrets. The running idea behind this is to interecpt hostile small craft and torpedos.

Other upgrades included a new computer core and impluse engines. However in 2402, during a controlled test, the port impluse engine exploded killing several technians. It was decided to scrap the new engines for tried and proven designs.

In the late 2405, Captian Sheridan took command of the Hornet, as her first offical commanding officer. With the increasing hostilites along the Klingon/Federation border, Sheridan had six Valkeriye fighters stationed onboard to provide extra fire support as needed. Starfleet Command has also needed to rush in the six Mk II Sovereigns into action much quicker than it would have liked aswell.
